How to split a PDF

Add your PDF

Drag a PDF anywhere onto this page, or press Choose PDF to pick it from your computer. On a phone, tap Pick PDF. Every page shows as a numbered tile in its own shape.

Choose how to split it

Pick pages puts the pages you choose into one new PDF. Parts cuts the PDF into several files. Every page saves each page as its own PDF.

Pick the pages

Tap the pages you want, or type them like 1-3, 7. For parts, tap the gap between two pages to cut there, or press In half. The panel shows how many files and pages you'll get.

Split and download

Press Split PDF and your new file downloads straight away. Several files come together in one ZIP, and your original PDF stays exactly as it was.

What's kept when you split a PDF

Splitting a PDF keeps every page exactly as it is: text, pictures, page size, web links and comments. Bookmarks, fillable form fields, accessibility tags and the document title don't come along. That's because each page you pick is copied into the new file as it is, while those extras belong to the whole file, not to one page. We tested every row below with our own files.

In your PDFKept?What that means
Every page you pickKeptEach page is copied as it is. In our test every split page matched its original, pixel for pixel.
Text you can select and searchKeptText stays text, so you can still copy it and search it.
PicturesKeptPhotos and scans are copied as they are, not saved again, so there's no loss in quality.
Page sizes and rotationKeptLetter, A4 and wide pages keep their own size, and pages you turned stay turned.
Web linksKeptLinks to websites still open when you tap them.
Highlights and commentsKeptNotes and highlights added in a PDF app come along with their page.
Links to other pagesKeptA link like "go to page 3" keeps working when page 3 is in the same new file. Links to pages you left out are removed.
BookmarksNot keptThe list of chapters in the sidebar is not carried over.
Fillable form fieldsNot keptAnswers already typed in still show, but the form itself isn't carried over. Fill forms in first, then split.
Accessibility tagsNot keptTags that help screen readers read a page in the right order aren't carried over. Keep the original if it has to stay accessible.
Title and author detailsNot keptThe original file's hidden title and author are not copied.

Signed PDFs are a special case. A digital signature only covers the exact file that was signed, so it won't count as valid in a split part. Keep signed originals separately.

How big the new files will be

Each new file only carries what its own pages use, so pulling out a few pages gives a small file. In our test, pages 1 to 3 of an 18 page, 11.3 MB handout came out at 438 KB.

Splitting every page into its own file can add up to more than the original, because pages that share a font or a picture each need their own copy once they're separate files. In our test, the same 11.3 MB handout split into 18 files totaling 13.5 MB.

How do I split a PDF into separate pages

Add your PDF, choose Every page and press Split PDF. Each page becomes its own PDF, and they all download together in one ZIP.

How do I save just one page of a PDF

Choose Pick pages, tap that page or type its number, then press Split PDF. You get one small PDF with only that page, named after it, like report-page-7.pdf.

How do I extract certain pages into one new PDF

Choose Pick pages, then tap the pages you want or type them like 1-3, 7. Press Split PDF and they come out together in one new PDF, in page order.

How do I split a PDF into two or more files

Choose Parts. Press In half for two files, or tap the gap after each page where a file should end. Press Split PDF and all the parts download together in one ZIP.

Does splitting a PDF lower the quality

No. Pages are copied as they are, without being saved again. In our test every split page matched its original, pixel for pixel.

Will links, bookmarks and form fields still work

Web links, highlights and comments are kept, and a link to another page keeps working when that page is in the same new file. Bookmarks and fillable form fields are not kept, though answers already typed into a form still show.

How do I make a big PDF small enough to email

Split it into parts or pull out only the pages you need. Each new file only carries what its own pages use: in our test, 3 pages taken from an 11.3 MB handout came out at 438 KB.

What are the new files called

They're named after your PDF and the pages inside, like report-pages-1-3.pdf, report-part-2-pages-10-18.pdf or report-page-12.pdf. Several files come together in one ZIP.

Can I split a password protected PDF

No. PDFs that need a password, or are locked against changes, are flagged as Protected. Open the file with its password and save a copy without one, then split that.

Is there a page or file size limit

There's no page limit. A PDF can be up to 500 MB on a computer and 200 MB on a phone or tablet, because the whole file is held in your device's memory while it's split.

Can I split a PDF on a Mac, Windows PC or Chromebook

Yes. This page works in any up to date browser, with nothing to install.

Can I split a PDF on my iPhone

Yes. Open this page in Safari, tap Pick PDF and choose your file from the Files app. Choose how to split it and tap Split PDF to download the result.

Is it free, with no sign up or email

Yes. Splitting PDFs here is free, with no account, no email, no daily limit and no watermark.

Are my files uploaded

No. Your files never leave your device. The PDF is split right in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, sent to us or stored anywhere.
