Three ways to split
- Pick pages: tap the pages you want, or type them in Pages like
1-3, 7. They come out as one new PDF, in page order, whatever order you picked them in. - Parts: cut the PDF into pieces. Tap the gap between two pages, type where to cut in Cut after like
3, 7, or tap In half. With an odd number of pages, the first half gets the extra one. - Every page: every page becomes its own PDF.
Split a PDF, step by step
- Open the PDF Splitter and tap Choose PDF (on a phone, Pick PDF). It works on one PDF at a time, and every page shows as a numbered tile.
- Under Split, choose Pick pages, Parts or Every page.
- Check You'll get: how many files, how many pages, and whether it downloads as a PDF or a ZIP.
- Tap Split PDF. It downloads straight away, and Download again stays there if you need it.
What the new files are called
| You chose | You get |
|---|---|
| Pages 1 to 3 | report-pages-1-3.pdf |
| Pages 2, 5 and 9 | report-3-pages.pdf |
| Parts | report-part-1-pages-1-3.pdf and so on, in report-parts.zip |
| Every page of an 18 page file | report-page-01.pdf and so on, in report-pages.zip |
What is kept when you split
Pages are copied exactly, with the same text, pictures and page size, and there is no page limit. Links to another page keep working when that page is in the same new file. Links to pages you left out are removed.
Bookmarks, fillable form fields, accessibility tags and the title and author details are not kept, though anything already typed into a form still shows. A signature does not stay valid in a split part.
How big the new files will be
Pulling out a few pages makes a much smaller file. In our test, pages 1 to 3 of an 11.3 MB PDF came out at 438 KB.
Saving every page on its own can add up to more than the original, though. All 18 single pages from that same file came to 13.5 MB, because fonts and pictures shared between pages get copied into each file.
Make a big PDF small enough to email
Gmail takes attachments up to 25 MB and the Outlook desktop app 20 MB by default. If your PDF is over, pick only the pages the other person needs, or cut it into Parts and send them separately. PDFs up to 500 MB work on a computer, or 200 MB on a phone or tablet.
Want to put pages from different files together? Split out what you need, then combine the PDFs into one.
