Are copy and paste fonts real fonts?

No. A font generator doesn't change your font: it swaps each letter for a look-alike character from Unicode, the shared list of characters that phones and computers use, so the style stays when you paste it into most places that take text. 13 of the 21 styles use the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols, a set of letters and digits Unicode added in 2001 for math formulas, and the rest use other Unicode sets, like circled, fullwidth and small capital letters. Unicode itself says they are meant for math, not everyday writing, which is why some apps and screen readers treat them differently from plain letters.

Can usernames use fancy fonts?

No, not on X or Discord: their help pages only allow plain letters A to Z, numbers and underscores in a username, plus periods on Discord. TikTok's help page also lists only letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Put fancy fonts in your display name, bio or posts instead. Discord, for example, says display names can use special characters. Here are the rules from each app's own help page, checked in October 2026.

AppA username can use
XLetters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9 and underscores, up to 15 characters. Your name, shown above it, can be up to 50 characters. Source
TikTokLetters, numbers, underscores and periods, 2 to 24 characters, and it can't end with a period. Source
DiscordLowercase letters a to z, numbers 0 to 9, underscores and periods, 2 to 32 characters. Your display name can use special characters and emoji. Source

Are fancy fonts accessible?

Not fully. Screen readers, the apps that read text aloud for people who are blind or have low vision, may skip fancy letters or read them as something other than the letters you see, so a styled sentence can be hard to follow. Two official accessibility guides warn about this: Section508.gov's social media guide says special characters are best avoided in social media posts, and Mass.gov's guide to accessible posts warns about fancy fonts by name.

It happens because most social media apps have no bold or italic button, so fancy fonts copy the look with different characters, and a screen reader reads the characters, not the look. If you use them, keep it to a few words, like your name or a heading, and keep anything important, like dates, prices or links, and every hashtag in plain text.

How does X count fancy fonts?

Most fancy letters count as 2 characters on X (Twitter), so a post in a fancy font reaches the 280 limit about twice as fast. X's documentation counts Latin letters, punctuation and common symbols as 1 and other Unicode characters as 2, and most fancy letters are those other characters. In most styles, spaces and punctuation stay plain, so they still count as 1. Here is how X counts the word Hello:

StyleHelloX countsWhy
PlainHello5Plain letters count as 1.
BoldHello in Bold10Every bold letter counts as 2.
CursiveHello in Cursive10Every cursive letter counts as 2.
Small capsHello in Small caps7The capital H and the small capital L count as 1, the rest as 2.
StrikethroughHello in Strikethrough10Each letter counts as 1, and so does the line through it.

The exact characters that count as 1 are listed in X's counting settings. To check a whole post before you share it, paste it into the Character Counter.

What is a font generator

An online tool that turns your text into fancy styles, like cursive, bold or gothic, ready to copy and paste.

How do I make bold text

Type your text and copy the Bold or Sans bold style. Most social media apps have no bold button, so bold letters like these are how people write in bold there. Keep it to a few words, since screen readers may not read them.

Can I use these fonts on Instagram

Yes, in places where you type your own text, like your bio or a caption, because the styles are ordinary text characters. Usernames are different: many apps only allow plain letters and numbers there.

How do I write in cursive to copy and paste

Type your text, then press Copy next to Cursive, or Bold cursive for thicker letters. Unicode calls these letters script.

Is there an Old English font to copy and paste

Yes, the Gothic style. Unicode calls these letters fraktur, a blackletter style often called Old English. There's a Bold gothic version too.

How do I make small text

Use Tiny for small raised letters or Small caps for small capital letters. The tiny q Unicode added in 2021 shows as an empty box on many devices, so q stays plain.

How do I cross out text

Use Strikethrough. It puts a line through every character except emoji and line breaks. Underline works the same way, with the line underneath.

Why do some letters look different from the rest

24 letters, like the cursive e and the italic h, were in Unicode before the rest of their style was added in 2001. Each style uses those older letters, so they can look slightly different from the letters next to them.

Why do some letters stay plain

Not every letter has a fancy version. Unicode has no small capital x, no cursive or gothic numbers, and no fancy versions of accented letters like รฉ or of most other alphabets. Its small capital q (2018) and tiny q (2021) are newer and missing from many fonts, so the tool keeps a plain q there. All of these stay as you typed them.

Why do I see empty boxes instead of letters

A box means the phone or computer showing the text has no font with that character. Every style here showed correctly in our checks on iPhone and Mac, but an older device can miss some, so if a style shows boxes, try another one.

Is my text saved or uploaded

No. Your text never leaves your device and isn't kept: every style is made right in your browser as you type.

Is it free, with no sign up

Yes. The font generator is free, with no account, no limit on how much you copy and nothing to install.
