Are they real fonts?
No, and that is exactly why they work. A font changes how letters look on your own screen, and most apps never let you pick one. These styles swap each letter for a different character from Unicode, the standard list of every character phones and computers can show.
Most of them come from a block called Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols, added in 2001 for maths formulas, which happens to hold bold, script and double struck copies of the alphabet. Because they are characters rather than a font, they keep their look wherever you paste them. Unicode itself says those characters are meant for maths, not for styling text, which explains the limits below.
Where they work and where they don't
- Instagram: they paste into your bio and captions.
- X: fine in your display name and posts. Usernames only take letters A to Z, numbers and underscores, up to 15 characters.
- Discord: fine in your display name. Usernames only take a to z, numbers, underscores and periods, 2 to 32 characters.
- TikTok: usernames only take letters, numbers, underscores and periods.
- Meta Verified: profile names on verified accounts do not accept symbols.
Screen readers
Screen readers may skip these letters, read them by their long Unicode names or spell them out one by one, so a fancy name can sound like nonsense to someone who cannot see it. The US government's Section 508 guidance for social media advises avoiding special characters for that reason. Keep your name, hashtags and anything important in plain letters, and use the fancy styles for decoration.
How X counts them
Most fancy letters count as 2 characters on X, because they sit outside the ranges X counts as 1. Strikethrough and Underline add a mark to every letter, so each of those costs 2 as well. A 20 letter name in Bold counts as 40. Check longer posts with the Character Counter, which counts the way X does.
Why some letters stay plain
Unicode does not have a fancy version of every character. Accented letters and other alphabets stay as they are, numbers stay plain in Cursive, Gothic and Italic, and a couple of letters have no small version, like q in Small caps and Tiny. The tool leaves those as normal letters rather than showing a blank.
