How to resize an image
Choose your photo
Drag a photo from your computer anywhere onto this page, or press Choose image to pick one from your computer or phone. Big photos straight from a phone camera are fine. The title bar shows the original size so you know where you are starting from.
Type an exact size
In Pixels type the width you need. With Keep proportions on the height changes by itself so the photo never stretches. Prefer to scale instead? Percent makes it 25%, 50% or 75% smaller in one click.
Or pick where it's going
Presets holds 40 exact sizes grouped by where the photo is going, from Instagram, TikTok and YouTube to online shops, screens and print. When the shape changes choose Fill to trim the edges or Fit to keep the whole picture.
Save and download
Pick JPG for photos, PNG for screenshots and logos, or WebP for the smallest file. Lower the quality slider to shrink the file further and watch the size update before you download. Your original photo stays exactly as it was.
Why resize an image
Uploads get rejected
Job portals and school sites often cap photo uploads at a set file size. Fewer pixels make a smaller file, and the Image Compressor can then land it just under the limit.
Profile pictures look blurry
Each app shows your profile photo as a small circle with its own size, from 320 × 320 on Instagram to 800 × 800 on YouTube. A square photo at the right size stays sharp and centred.
Posts get cropped
Every app shows photos in its own shape and the Instagram profile grid now crops posts to 3:4. Resize to the right size first so nothing important gets cut.
Wallpapers look soft
A wallpaper should match the screen exactly, like 1920 × 1080 for Full HD or 3840 × 2160 for 4K. Any other size gets stretched or cropped by the screen and loses sharpness.
Emails bounce
Gmail and Outlook.com allow 25 MB of attachments, and the Outlook desktop app only 20 MB. A few full size phone photos can go over while smaller copies send straight away.
Shop photos fall short
Amazon only turns on zoom for images of at least 1000 pixels on the longest side and Etsy recommends 2000. Smaller photos hide the detail buyers want to see.

Photo print sizes
Sizes in pixels at 300 DPI
A sharp print needs about 300 pixels for every inch (300 DPI), so multiply the inches by 300. A 6 × 4 inch print needs 1800 × 1200.
Image resizing explained
Does resizing reduce quality
Making a photo smaller does not reduce quality you can see. The tool blends neighbouring pixels together so the smaller copy stays sharp.
Making a photo bigger is different. The tool has to invent new pixels in between, so large enlargements look soft. To resize without losing quality only make photos smaller and save them at a high quality setting.
Resize without stretching or cropping
Stretching happens when the width and height change by different amounts. With Keep proportions on the height follows the width, so the shape never changes.
When you need a new shape, like a square for Instagram, choose Fit to keep the whole photo on a soft background or Fill to fill the frame by trimming a little from the edges. Avoid Stretch for photos of people.
Resizing vs cropping
Resizing keeps the whole picture and changes how many pixels it has. Cropping cuts away part of the picture and keeps the rest at full detail.
Resize when a photo is too big. Crop when you only want part of it. Many jobs need both, so crop to the right shape first and then resize to the right size.
Does resizing reduce file size
Yes. File size depends mostly on the number of pixels. Halve the width and the height and you keep only a quarter of the pixels, so the file usually shrinks to about a quarter too.
The format and quality setting change the file size as well without touching the dimensions. Too many pixels means resize. A file that is still too heavy means lower the quality.
Does resizing change DPI
Resizing changes the pixels, not the DPI. DPI is only a print setting that says how many pixels fit into each inch on paper. Online a 1800 × 1200 photo looks exactly the same at 72 DPI or 300 DPI.
When people say resolution they usually mean the pixel dimensions. Resizing up cannot add real detail, so a higher resolution photo has to come from the camera. For printing divide the pixels by 300 to find the largest sharp print.
Why is my image blurry
The usual causes are a photo that was enlarged past its original size, a site that shrank and compressed it on upload, or a low quality setting when it was saved.
To fix it start again from the original photo, resize it to exactly the size the site asks for and save it at a quality of 80 or above. Uploading the exact size stops apps from resizing it for you.

Frequently asked questions
Still stuck? Contact usWhat's the difference between resizing and compressing
Resizing changes the dimensions, how many pixels wide and tall the image is. Compressing keeps the dimensions and saves the image with less detail so the file gets smaller. Need both? Resize first, then lower the quality slider.
How do I get an image under 100KB
Resize it to the dimensions you need, then lower the quality slider and watch the file size before you download.
Which image formats can I open
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and any other picture your browser can show. Photos picked from an iPhone library open as normal. HEIC files on a computer open in Safari but not in every browser.
Which format should I save as
JPG for everyday photos. PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with a see-through background. WebP gives the smallest file, but some older sites do not accept it.
Will a PNG keep its transparent background
Yes, when you save as PNG or WebP the see-through parts stay see-through. JPG cannot store transparency, so those parts turn white.
Are my photos uploaded
No. Your photos never leave your device. The resizing happens right in your browser, so nothing is sent to us or stored anywhere.
Does it change my original photo
No. You download a new, resized copy. The photo on your computer or phone stays exactly as it was.
Can I resize photos on my phone
Yes. Open this page on your phone, tap Choose image and pick a photo from your library. The resized copy saves to your downloads.
