Instagram sizes in 2026
| Post | Size in pixels | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Feed post, tallest | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 |
| Story or reel | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 or more | Shown as a circle |
Instagram's own help page says photos between 320 and 1,080 pixels wide, with a shape between 1.91:1 and 3:4, keep their resolution. Wider photos are shrunk to 1080, narrower ones are enlarged to 320, and other shapes are cropped.
3:4 or 4:5: which to post
Early in 2025 Instagram changed the profile grid from squares to 3:4 tiles, and a few months later it let you upload 3:4 photos too. A 1080×1440 post now fills both the feed and the grid exactly.
4:5 still looks great in the feed, it just loses a thin strip from each side on your grid. If you want the most room on screen and no surprises on your profile, go 3:4.
How the profile grid crops your posts
- 3:4 posts show whole.
- 4:5 posts lose about 34 pixels from each side.
- Square posts lose about 135 pixels from each side.
- Landscape posts show only the middle, roughly 424 of their 1080 pixels.
Resize a photo for Instagram, step by step
- Open the Image Resizer and tap Choose image (on a phone, Pick an image), or drag your photo in.
- Under Resize by, choose Presets.
- Tap Instagram, then the size you need, like Grid post (3:4) or Portrait post.
- Under When the shape changes, pick Fill or Fit.
- Leave the format on JPG and tap Download image. The file is named with its new size, like
photo-1080x1440.jpg.
Fill or Fit: keep the whole photo
- Fill covers the whole size and trims whatever sticks out. Best when the subject sits in the middle.
- Fit keeps the whole photo and fills the gaps with a soft, blurred copy of it, so nothing gets cut off.
- Stretch squeezes the photo to fit. Avoid it for people and faces.
Why Instagram photos look blurry
Instagram shrinks anything wider than 1080 pixels, enlarges anything narrower than 320, and compresses every photo. Uploading exactly 1080 wide means Instagram changes it as little as possible. If the resizer says the result is bigger than the original, your photo was smaller than the size you picked and may look softer.
Sizes for other apps
The same Presets cover TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, shop photos for Amazon, Etsy and Shopify, screens and prints at 300 DPI: 40 sizes in all. For your own numbers, choose Pixels and type the width. Keep proportions is on, so the height follows, or switch it off to set both.
