How many words is a page?
A Letter page at 12 pt Times New Roman with 1 inch margins holds about 670 words single spaced, 450 words at 1.5 spacing and 335 words double spaced. We measured it in Microsoft Word with ordinary paragraphs of text: depending on the text, a page held 651 to 697 words single spaced, 436 to 465 at 1.5 spacing and 327 to 346 double spaced. Arial fits fewer, about 590 to 630, 400 to 425 and 290 to 310.

What counts as a word?
A word is any group of letters, numbers or symbols between spaces. Hyphenated words count as one word, and a long dash splits two words. The word counter counts words the same way Microsoft Word does: we checked 42 tricky cases and a 12,952 word document against Word, and every count matched. These are the rules people ask about most. Does it count words the same way as Microsoft Word
Yes. We checked it against Microsoft Word on 42 tricky cases, like hyphens, dashes, numbers, web addresses and emoji, and on a 12,952 word document. Every count matched.
Are hyphenated words counted as one word
Yes. Well-known counts as one word. Long dashes are different: two words joined by a long dash count as two, and a long dash on its own isn't counted.
How are characters counted
Characters count every letter, number, symbol and space, and the panel also shows the count without spaces. An emoji counts as one character, and pressing Enter for a new line doesn't add one.
