How to clear Safari and app cache on iPhone

Clear Safari's history, cookies and cache on your iPhone, keep your history if you want, and see what you can do about an app's cache.

Short answer

For Safari, open Settings, tap Apps, then Safari, and tap Clear History and Website Data. For other apps, look in iPhone Storage, or delete the app and download it again if it is still in the App Store.

Clear Safari history and cache

History, cookies and cache are cleared together.

  1. Open Settings, tap Apps, then Safari.
  2. Scroll down and tap Clear History and Website Data.
  3. Choose the timeframe, then tap Clear History.

This does not change your AutoFill. If the button is grey, there is nothing to clear, or you may need to check the web content limits in Screen Time.

Keep your history, clear the rest

Remove cookies and cache only.

  1. Open Settings, tap Apps, then Safari.
  2. Tap Advanced, then Website Data.
  3. Tap Remove All Website Data, then Remove Now.

This also removes the data websites use to keep you signed in, so you may need to sign in again.

Clear an app's cache

There is no one button for every app.

In iPhone Storage, tap an app. Depending on the app, you may be able to delete some of its documents and data there. Otherwise Delete App removes the app and its data, and you can download it again from the App Store, if it is still available. Offload App does not help here, because it keeps the app's data.

Data kept in iCloud is not deleted with the app. Anything stored only in the app may be lost.

Your iPhone clears caches by itself too

You do not always have to do it.

When space runs low, your iPhone removes cached and temporary files on its own. See what is System Data on iPhone.
